There is no problem walking up the Glossop Golf Course road past the club - you then pass an old Water Works building and a house both on your right - there is then cattle grid and then the only place where you are very close to the golfers - as there is a tee. Obviously if there people playing that hole then its polite to wait for them (or they may tell you just to go ahead) - the track goes down a little and over a bridge and directly at the dam. Worth pausing here and have a look for Grey or Pied Wagtail or Dipper before you go up a rather steep and broken track and you are then at the Dam height. Its really worth a look and early is probably best. Look out for Whinchat, Sandpiper and lots more. Dipper often in the run off channel. btw if you follow the track to the end and towards the sluice gate then you can get through to Open Country through the gate on your left before the sluice. I've seen Short Eared Owl in the section of moor but not this year. Hope you get the chance to visit.

Yes I know what you mean about the maps. If you look at this one you can see the track which goes on past the bottom of the dam up the North side and along - the last part is incorrect it does not continue East but goes down hill to the 'Weir' As I mentioned a full size gate gives you access to open moors at this point and you are then able to walk beside Hurst Brook for a while before the ground gets rough. Worth a look up there even if its just over the gate rather than walking. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=404682&Y=393981&A=Y&Z=115 I agree if you look on a map its unclear about access at that point but if you check on http://www.openaccess.naturalengland.org.uk/wps/portal/oasys/maps/MapSearch you can see its open access land beyond the gate. Don't worry about going along there its clearly OK and there are even signs about not disturbing nesting birds just after you get level with the dam - United Utilities put them up I guess.

Hi Magellan, I'm a local birder too can you tell me where you saw the Ring Ouzel? I've never seen one and it is on my wish list for this year. I finally tracked down Waxwings in January which were also on this years wishlist! Padbirder

Sounds like a great encounter with the Waxwings - I've been lucky and seen them on my street some years ago but the ones that seem to be everywhere this winter have evaded me though I know at times if I'd been very close to them without knowing
