As the one of most popular original forum threads started by onemanandhisdog last year no longer opens I thought I'd start it again for 2011. My starter is Skylarks singing on the South end of Cown Edge near Rowarth Derbyshire fighting against a very windy day but still breaking the sound barrier

Bird of the day for me has to be the pair of Bramblings which have turned up in the garden on the feeders. Seems a bit late in the year for them to be hanging around but still a welcome distraction.

Really interesting you should mention this - We have had up to three Bramblings at feeders in the last 7-10 days but never spotted them at all through the whole winter before that. As you say a very welcome visitor

My local Pied Flycatcher is back - yipee ! I had a great time watching a pair last year- the first time I've ever had more than a fleeting view of these. Only saw a Male today hoping the female returns as of course.

Bird of the day..... My favourite birds of the moorland - A great encounter with a Male Wheatear today who was very tolerant of my attempts to photograph him and followed me up to open moorland (or was there more than 1 - I think not). A lovely sunny day and he looked fantastic.

Today I went looking for Ring Ouzel. I walked and walked and stood and watched and waited and spent at least 10 minutes looking at something I thought was one way off in the distance but then I thought it was never moving - or did it - no - don't know what it was but probably not a Ring Ouzel. I gave up and started to walk home - half way back - a Ring Ouzel pair flew past me and landed on a wall not 10 metres away - my closest ever encounter - Bird of the Day !

Well yesterday it had to be the Swift - I've been looking skyward for days now with no luck. A solo bird early in the day but then 8 turned up by tea-time. A bit more like bird of the year (any year!) than bird of the day. I saw a tweet form someone last week - "The world's still working - the Swifts are back" (it was Bird Life News)

A real treat today - A double flycatcher day in Shire Hill Wood Glossop (just next to the A57 Snake Pass road) First Spotted Flycatcher of the year quickly followed by the Pied Flycatcher I already knew was there visiting his nestbox with food. >>>>> I'd love to hear other people's bird of the day <<<<<<<
