Bill black, legs red. Pink metacarpal spur at the bend of the wing. Face and sides of head black, extending down the sides of the neck. Crown and nape greyish, brown, extending down the back of the neck to shoulders. White lines from forehead to lower nape separate the two. Brownish back, black and white lines along the scapulars. Throat, upper breast and lower underparts white with broad black band across lower breast. Wings: coverts greyish, brown, secondaries white, primaries black. Tail white with broad black terminal band.
