Long bill, seems upturned. Slight crest. Head grey, crest and nape black, as is line down the back of the neck. Neck otherwise eddish-cinnamon. Back dark brown with a greenish tinge, underparts white with the sides of the breast cinnamon. Grey-brown flanks. 'Tail' chestnut-red. White proximal primaries and all secondaries show as a large white patch in the extended wing. In n-br plumage the throat, breast and part of the face are white, the crown and neck grey. Imm plumage is like the n-br. Alone or in pairs. Sleeps on the water with neck folded along the back.
