Overall chestnut-brown scaled blackish and whitish on cheeks, throat, neck, breast and flanks, fainter on mid-belly and undertail coverts. Black cap, fore-part heavily dotted red, tiny white spots behind (♀ lacks red).

Varzea forest, forest on river islands, bushes and thickets.
