Unmistakable on the ground. In flight can look like Black Stork but lacks black neck and is much larger. In non-breeding and juvenile plumage throat pouch smaller.

Generally silent.

In native Africa: open savannas with lakes, pools, marshes, rivers etc. Also found around rubbish dumps.
